Recent news from CAPA (Anglican Provinces in Africa):

Source: Religious Intelligence (November 8, 2008)
By George Conger

The deposition of the Bishop of Pittsburgh was a "totalitarian" abuse of power and will not be recognized by the church in Africa, the chairman of the Council of Anglican Provinces of Africa (CAPA) has declared.

On Nov 1, CAPA chairman Archbishop Ian Ernest, Primate of the Church of the Indian Ocean and Bishop of Mauritius, wrote to Bishop Robert Duncan on behalf of the African provinces and stated the African archbishops "continue to recognize you as a bishop in good standing in the Anglican Communion."

"Your commitment to orthodox Christian doctrine grounded in the Holy Scriptures is after all the mark of your identity as a true believer in the Anglican tradition," Archbishop Ernest said. "Your grace, patience and forbearance in the face of opposition to your holy calling is an example to us all."

At a special session of the US House of Bishops on Sept 18 called to discuss the Lambeth Conference, the American bishops voted 87 to 35, with four abstentions to defrock Bishop Duncan, removing him from the ordained ministry for propounding the view that a diocese may withdraw from the Episcopal Church.

The bishops had worked "carefully and prayerfully" and their "conversation was holy" US Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori said. However, Bishop Dunca n's "actions over recent months and years constitute ‘abandonment of ‘the communion of this church" and that he should be deposed," she said. ...

The Reverend Dr. Chris Sugden of Anglican Mainstsream in the UK Reports First Hand on Lambeth:

"All that said, the Conference had an unforgettable conclusion.. As the final service ended in Canterbury Cathedral, the names of nine members of an Anglican Mission Order in Melanesia martyred in 2003 were placed in the chapel of Martyrs of our Time. Their colleagues processed with their names, from the nave up the many steps to the quire screen, singing the most haunting refrain. They passed from sight through the quire screen. But they continued singing. The refrain echoed round the cathedral. It was as though we had seen the martyrs themselves pass into the nearer presence of God, yet their beautiful singing could still he heard. Strong men and women wept..." We have placed an article on our Orthodox Anglicans in TEC page: "A Faith's Dwindling Following," by George F. Will

"...The Anglican communion once was a 'via media,' a middle way, between Catholicism and Protestantism. Now, Duncan says, the national leadership of the Episcopal Church thinks of itself as a bridge between Protestantism and the culture. Duncan and other protesters agree with the late Flannery O'Connor, the Catholic novelist: 'You have to push as hard as the age that pushes against you..."

View "Thanks, a report and a warning - Bishop Duncan’s statement to the press" on Angican-Mainstream.net:

"Bishop Bob Duncan opened his press conference in London on Friday with an expression of thanks, a report on the US situation and a warning.

'First, I am here to say thank you to those in the Church of England and the wider church who have been so supportive in recent days. The statements by senior bishop, no less than the Bishops of Rochester, Winchester, Exeter, Chester, Chichester, Durham, Blackburn, Birkenhead, Lewes. These public statements have been greatly appreciated and a great encouragement to folks back home. It is also the case that organisations in the Church of England who have made public statements from the time of my deposition: Anglican Mainstream, the Church of England Evangelical Council, Reform, Forward in Faith, has been both a personal support and also a wonderful encouragement to our people. I think the irony of the present situation is that I would be welcome and recognized in more places around the communion than my primate. That is a rather remarkable turn of events. So first I have come here to say thank you and have a number of private conversations with leaders, particularly with our friends in the epsicopate. That has been my first purpose in being here..."(view article by clicking here).
